Dr. Hanzel Larios, M.D., joins Cura Vida Cannabis Clinics (CVCC) as Co-Medical Director, bringing over 20 years of extensive experience as a renowned medical professional and general practitioner in Costa Rica.

As a pioneer in the Costa Rican healthcare sector, Dr. Larios is also the founder of Medi Red Costa Rica, where he has been instrumental in the success of over 10 medical centers, emphasizing a commitment to innovation, advanced technology, and a humanitarian approach to patient care.

Dr. Abraham Benavides

Dr. Abraham Benavides, MD, is the Co-Medical Director for Cura Vida Cannabis Clinics, leading the strategic charge on cannabis clinician education, research, and patient advocacy in an administrative, non-clinical capacity.

As the CEO and Co-Founder of MEDEC-CR—Costa Rica’s first and premier medical cannabis doctor’s association—Dr. Benavides leverages this partnership to establish a national standard for evidence-based cannabis medicine and professional training. He has educated over 3 million patients worldwide, including thousands of healthcare providers and researchers. He is recognized for his strong commitment to evidence-based content, having co-authored and peer-reviewed over 750 cannabis and terpene health science articles.

In 2020, Dr. Abe was in family medicine residency training in Seattle, where he survived severe COVID but now lives with disabilities including long COVID, POTS, and PTSD. This focused his attention solely on non-clinical work and healing. Dr. Benavides is dedicated to promoting safe, high-quality, and equitable access to cannabinoid education and medicine in Costa Rica and worldwide.
 
In the first year of legalization, Dr. Abe was the youngest conference speaker at the 2022 Inaugural Costa Rica Cannabis Congress, invited by the Society of Cannabis Clinicians. In May 2023, he gained international recognition as Costa Rica’s top cannabis scholar by the Cannabis Science & Industry Center of the Americas, nominated by Vida Afortunada. 
 
His dedication to advocacy stems from the memory of his great-grandmother, a tropical remedy healer in Cartagena, Guanacaste, and his experience as a first-generation Costa Rican immigrant who pioneered and advocated for cannabis education at a US medical school.

Dr. Sebastian Waugh

Dr. Sebastian Waugh is a Medical Doctor with over three years of clinical experience, graduating with honors from the University of Costa Rica and holding a Master’s degree in Anti-Aging and Longevity Medicine from the University of Barcelona  . He is currently pursuing an MBA with a specialization in Big Data and Business Analytics, strengthening his ability to integrate clinical practice with data-driven healthcare innovation.

His medical career began in acute care settings, where managing complex and chronic patients sparked a deeper interest in root-cause medicine and comprehensive therapeutic strategies. This experience led him to focus on integrative health, regenerative medicine, and personalized treatment protocols aimed at optimizing long-term outcomes rather than symptom suppression alone.

Through his work in longevity and chronic disease management, he developed a strong interest in evidence-based alternative therapies, including medical cannabis. He is particularly interested in the role of cannabinoid-based treatments in inflammation modulation, chronic pain, neuroimmune regulation, and overall patient-centered integrative care.

My name is Dr. Valeria Rojas and I am a general practitioner with 3+ years of hands on clinical experience. I graduated from UCIMED in 2022 and have practiced medicine in both private and public health care settings. During my training, I had the privilege to participate in medical rotations in the United States as well. Born and raised in Florida by Latin American parents, I moved to Costa Rica at a young age, and graduated from an International American high school. With my international background and wide range of clinical knowledge, I am excited to be working with you in order to meet your needs as one of our patients at CVCC.
